Review - I think La Conguita's is a great place! The prices are affordable and the food is delicious. The environment is very welcoming and clean and the people are nice. Sometimes you do have to do a little extra to get peoples attention for service or else the employees end up having there own conversation but everything else is great!

Review - I have been eating at this establishment for many years. I remember going in the early 80's as a little kid. I have moved down to South Jersey, and I make special trips back into J.C. just to eat here. I am spanish speaking so I've never had a problem communicating with the staff. Sometimes you wait a little longer, but you are getting fresh, authentic cuban/puerto rican food. I love the food here so much, I always order a plate to take home, cause I don't get to J.C. as much as I'd like. If you walk in with time to spare, and expecting to wait, I know you will really enjoy the food. Try the empanadas, or the pastel. It reminds me so much of my grandma's. You will not be disappointed!

Review - service is hit or miss but they try, friendly for the most part. seems to be going through some changes and growing pains right now since it was remodeled. i heard itll be closed soon also for more renovations. food is great, home style like when i was a kid. nothing fancy but very tasty and thats what makes it great. still pretty cheap compared to other places for the amount of food they serve.

Review - While I agree that the service is sometimes disjointed, the people there are friendly enough. It is a Mom & Pop place with a menu that could feed a suprising amount of people for very little $$, so stop expecting it to be annything other than that. It is a neighborhood place with its own charm. As for the attention of the staff, grab someone and just ASK. Its crazy there sometimes but the atmosphere is part of the charm.

Review - Excellent home-style cooking. While it is a cuban restuarant and the food is 100% cuban, you will feel at home. Excellent cuban cheeseburger, seafood, chicken platters and rice & beans. Service is really slow, but always worth the wait. You can order beer. $2.50 sandwhiches as well.

Review - Contrary to other reviews posted here, I just want to say the people here are great! The reason it takes a little longer is because it is fresh food, made to order and good food takes time! The food is amazing (go on thursday for the best roast pork you ever tasted!) Not to mention you could eat for a week on one portion! This place is in my top 3!

Review - This place is outstanding! Not only is an order of chicken, rice, sweet bananas, beans, and bread with butter $5.00, but it's also authentic Cuban. This restaraunt is amazing on it's own. The fact that it's in Jersey City is even more amazing. If JC can encourage this place to replicate along the Grove and Newark Ave. intersection, JC would give Hoboken a serious run for their money. Add in a few bars and they'd put 'boken out of business.

Review - A friend told me about this place. The food was great. Contrary to what other people experienced, the service was just fine. It was just a little layback but that is how people in the caribbean are(myself included). If you want quick service I suggest you go to fast food restaurant. Otherwise La Conguita is a place where you can go and relax as you enjoy a good meal. The flan was great an so was the expresso coffee.

Review - I love what they've done with the place; the new renovations make it extremely welcoming and uplifting. The food is good, and the prices are as well. Even though I do love the food they serve up, I can't ignore the fact that the service here is TERRIBLE. I've been a patron for years; even before they renovated and it was just a white walls and flourescent light steam-pan joint. Even still, I cannot deny the lack of hospitality and service. The waiters don't really care about you, and don't really acknowledge the fact you're there. When they finally do take your order, the food takes upwards of half an hour on most days. But the cuban sandwiches, empanadas, and sutffed fish keeps me coming back. My advice? Try calling in your order for a pickup if you're not up for annoyance. If you're patient and have a lot of time on your hands, wander in and beprepared to wait. Good luck!

Review - My husband and I just moved to J.C. from Manhattan, and we have mixed reviews of La Conguita. We think their prices are great, especially the Cuban sandwich for only $3.50. But the quality of the food is mediocre. I had the garlic chicken, and the chicken was extremely dry and it tasted old. It seemed to have been fried first, then covered with a bland sauce that wasn't garlicky at all. The sauce also seemed to have a fake lemon/Lysol taste. We may come here for sandwiches, but overall we are not impressed. In Manhattan, we love going to Margon-- which is also Cuban and has extremely reasonable prices. After reading the reviews here, I was expecting something close to that level, but unfortunately La Conguita doesn't come close.

Review - Ive been a customer way before renovations. My family has been going to La Conquita since I was about 5 years old and unfortunately the service has caused my family to back off. Its not a big deal to wait for great for food but the new I think Im the best thing on earth waiters and waitresses are what really brings this place down. It even seems to be rubbing off on the one waitress who has been there for years - even she doesnt want to be bothered to smile or just to attend you. My mother has even had to threaten the workers there with going to the owner - which just for those who dont know, he can usually be found across the street at the supermarket - just to get service. You can sit there for 15 min before someone even acknowledges you and please dont even expect any good energy from those people.....but why do i keep going?? Ah, well the food is still just great - the best actually!

Review - just got back from the restaurant. i actually read a couple of these reviews before we left so i went in, kind of expecting the worst. we walked in, picked our own table and just sat down. We didn't have to wait too long for a waiter and he was polite. The biggest problem started once we ordered our food and the just the two sodas took longer than meals should. Food is decent though, but they seemed not to have more than half of the items on the menu.

Review - I've been living here for a couple of years now and I think Conguita's food is WAY better than Hard Grove. However, I am a white boy that can speak Spanish(somewhat) but everyone in here that has posted about the service is right on - if they don't know you, or you can't speak Spanish, it is as if you are a ghost, you can stand at that counter for an hour without even a look from the staff.

Review - The service is terrible- if you don't know how to speak spanish, don't expect to get service right away. Both times I have been there, I have waited patiently for 20-25 mins, I just left. I'd rather go to the other cuban restaurant down the street.

Review - I love the food at this place. Always fresh even late evening just before closing. I suggest you call ahead for your order or you'll be waiting along time to eat. Service is really poor. Need more servers especially during the peak of lunch and dinner.

Review - I agree with Jeff. Their horrible service holds them back. If you are not Spanish-speaking or they don't know you, forget it. There is no concept of customer service, and never a manager around when you ask for one. And the service is not better than Hard Grove's. Maybe on par with, but no worse than.
Their redeeming qualities [the only reason I go back] -- the empanadas, the Spanish coffee, the daily specials, and the new decor IS rather bright inviting.
I hope they read this review and take heed, because they really COULD be a gem to downtown Jersey City if the service were better.

Review - Nicely renovated. The service needs improvement. You can wait at the counter or come in and no one will seat or help you. The language barrier can be a problem at times. I've had my order messed up a couple of times. But I still enjoy the food. Hard Grove has better service.

Review - The service was horrible!!! The waitress didn't even know what was on the menu. It was as if we asked for Chinese food. The staff ignored us and when we asked for something (that was on the menu) they would just start talking in Spanish as if we were not there. We even asked to speak with a manager but one of the workers told us that there wasn’t a manager. Looks can be deceiving…it looks real nice from the outside but the service will keep us from going back. Food - 25/50 Decor - 25/50 Customer Service - 0/50 (2004-07-19 )
