Review - This place has a following, which is always your first sign that a restaurant is doing well, or at least better-than-average. The layout begins with an intimate cocktail lounge, which books a latin band on weekends; located directly above is their cigar lounge, which I haven't yet frequented. The main seating area for the restaurant has cozy booths bordering the open-style kitchen. There is additional seating in an annex which brings you to the very back of the restaurant, a slightly quieter area. Food is flat-out Cuban, not nouveau or fused. No shavings of this or essences of that. It's pricier than a loncheria in Union City, but again, the atmosphere and service justify it. You'll have a nice time - the crowd is lively, and the place carries with it a certain sexiness. I split a salad which had a citrus-based dressing which was refreshing, and for my entree, the ropa vieja, which was tender and quite tasty. This place is suitable for couples as well as an office party - it's feels big yet inviting. The chef is dedicated to his passion and it shows.

Review - My fiancee and I went to Azucar just this evening. We were very pleasantly surprised! We were greeted and seated right away. The dining room was very full and our service was still wonderful. Started with the app. sampler for 2 ($25), which can definitely satisfy 3 or 4 with 2 great entrees to follow ($10 and $17). Wine list was sufficient but not over the top - glasses between $5 and $9, a good South American beer selection too. We didn't have dessert only because we were so full, but the diners next to us had flan and it looked wonderful. We were very happy to see this new restaurant doing well already and hope Azucar stays busy and keeps the quality of food and service high. Definitely worth a visit!

Review - Our server was great and able to make many recommendations on the food and preparation and drinks. The mojitos are wonderful and the food was delicious. The tapas for 2 appetizer is big enough for more and very good giving you some of everything on the tapas menu and the entrees were so so good and large portions leaving little room for dessert, but we'll definitely be back again soon to try even more!

Review - A good friend recommended it to my wife and me. We went for dinner and wind up staying until close to 2am. The atmosphere is great and the food is top notch. The band that plays there on weekends is amazing, so the fact that they have little sitting area at the bar/lounge will not be an issue since you would probably be dancing all night. They have managed to combine great food and great atmosphere at a great price, this place rocks!

Review - My boyfriend and I loved Azucar! Very fun atmosphere and decor. Red Sangria and Gambas Catalan al Ajillo appetizer were excellent. Our entrees were just as good. The waitress was not attentive at all but the food and decor made up for it.

Review - This was a very pleasant surprise. I went to this restaurant with a friend because we wanted to try something new. The food was great, the service was great...the only problem, they don't deliver. :(

Review - We went to Azucar for the first time, and were blown away by the fantastic food, drinks and service. Having lived in jersey city for a short time, but eating out frequently, this is by far my favorite restaurant in the city. Try their Coco Loco Mojito, it is fantastic....
I had their shrimp cerviche, and the garlic shrimp, it was fresh, it was flavorful, and it was filling.
I highly recomend it.....

Review - a very nice addition to newport. service was excellent, the atmosphere nice, loved the selection of cuban music. the cuisine is good - but for me a little on the heavy side, sauces somewhat oily. wish they would lighten up a bit on the sides: all very heavy(rice, beans, fried plantains, cassava). or cut thru with something sour. i love fresh cuban citrus marinades - how about a lighter dressing or sauce, based on that? and something green, besides lettuce?
