Creating extra storage / loft space
Posted by Anonymous on 2009/11/2 13:51:19
I have been thinking of adding / constructing a platform or cabinet with doors in my second room on which I can store suitcases etc. I wanted to use the extra space provided by the high ceiling and build this high up on the wall.
Has anyone done this before, and if so, can you kindly refer me to a contractor who built this for you.
Also will I need to move the sprinkler system?

It would be cheaper to buy a 2nd apartment in the building than to do this. Between constructing another level and moving the sprinklers....

Not to my surprise, the above person is full of it.
Yes I have is your answer. As I have created a platform and not a closed area I have not had to move the sprinkler system.
This has given me a 8ft*6ft*4ft storage area, its fantastic. I need a ladder to access....you would not believe how much storage I have created.
Happy to show you if you wish.

I would be very grateful if you could kindly show us what the storage area looks like. My wife and I live in the Hudson Street building and can stop by at any time in the evenings after 6:30 pm. Thank you.

did you need a permit from the city to do this or don't you need one?

I am guessing that if you come in close to the sprinkler then you need to move it and for that you will need a permit. Additionally the building condo assoc may want you to run it by them.
An alternative is to build cabinets up high and use those for storage - think these may not require moving the sprinkler. Dont know for sure.........

I am not the same guy who discussed moving sprinklers, before. However, work like this might not physically require you to move the sprinklers because they are in the way, but from a code perspective you would be required to move the sprinklers.
A permit should be taken for this type of work and as such will require moving sprinklers. In addition, you should notify the condo association in case there are any problems with common elements.

You don't have to move sprinkler you just need to install another sprinkler head
That cost about 1500 if i remember correctly since the building only approves one company to install this
The extra cabinet above the closed is huge and not very expensive to get a contractor to do it.
The only thing that is drags is to get the approval for city hall because of the well known corruption issues.

I was wondering the same thing. The space above the bathroom and the closets would be like a mini attic.
